Pregnant & Have a Dog? 🐶👶

Here’s How to Get Your Pup Ready for Baby

If you’re pregnant and already have a dog, you might have found yourself wondering:

“What is my dog going to think when this tiny, crying human comes home?” 😂

Maybe your dog has been your baby for years. They sleep in your bed, follow you into the bathroom, know exactly where the treats are, and somehow manage to appear every time you open the refrigerator.

And now you’re bringing home an actual baby.

Don’t worry. Your dog doesn’t need to be perfect. And you don’t need to completely change your life before the baby arrives.

A little preparation can go a long way. ❤️

🐾 Your Dog Knows Something Is Changing

Dogs are incredibly observant.

Your dog may notice your changing body, your new routine, or all the baby stuff suddenly appearing around the house.

One day there’s a crib in the living room.

Then a stroller.

Then approximately 47 tiny outfits.

Your dog is probably thinking, “I have several questions.”

Let them sniff and investigate new baby items while you’re around. There’s no need to make everything mysterious.

👶 Practice the New Routine

Babies are adorable.

Babies are also unpredictable.

Your dog may be used to a very specific routine—and that routine might get a little messy once the baby arrives.

If you normally walk your dog at the same time every morning, try occasionally changing the timing.

If you know you’ll spend more time sitting with the baby, give your dog a special chew or toy they can enjoy nearby.

You’re helping your pup learn:

Different doesn’t mean bad.

🍼 Don’t Forget Your Dog

This is probably the biggest worry for dog moms.

“What if my dog feels neglected?”

And honestly? There may be days when your dog gets less attention than they’re used to.

You’re recovering.

You’re feeding a baby.

You’re tired.

You’re trying to remember whether you’ve showered.

That’s okay.

Your dog doesn’t need you to entertain them every minute.

Sometimes five minutes of belly rubs while the baby naps is enough.

A quick walk around the block counts.

A game of fetch in the backyard counts.

A treat while you’re sitting on the couch counts.

Little moments still matter.

💕 Give Your Dog Their Own Special Place

Before the baby arrives, create a cozy spot just for your dog.

Maybe it’s their favorite bed in the corner of the living room or a crate filled with their favorite blanket.

Make it somewhere they can go when they want a little peace and quiet.

Because eventually, your baby is going to become mobile.

And once that happens?

Your dog may desperately appreciate having somewhere to escape the tiny human who has discovered that ears are extremely interesting. 😂

🐶 Let Your Dog Be Part of It

Your dog doesn’t need to be pushed out of your life because you had a baby.

Quite the opposite.

Let them hang out nearby while you feed the baby.

Talk to them.

Give them treats for calm behavior.

Include them on family walks when you can.

Let them sniff the baby’s blanket.

Let them watch you change diapers with the appropriate level of confusion.

They’re still part of the family.

👀 Learn Their “I’m Done” Signals

Even the sweetest dog needs space sometimes.

Watch for things like:

  • Walking away
  • Hiding
  • Turning their head away
  • Lip licking
  • Yawning
  • Becoming stiff or uncomfortable

These are little ways your dog may be saying, “I need a break.”

Listen to them.

And as your baby grows, teach them that the dog’s bed, crate, food, and toys are off-limits.

Supervision is important whenever babies and dogs are together.

❤️ And Then There’s the First Meeting…

You may have seen those adorable videos where a dog meets the new baby and immediately becomes obsessed.

They’re precious.

But don’t worry if your dog’s first reaction is more like:

“Okay… interesting. Anyway, where’s my dinner?”

Every dog is different.

Keep the first introduction calm and relaxed. Let your dog approach at their own pace and reward calm behavior.

There’s no need to force a big moment.

Your relationship will develop naturally.

🌸 Give Yourself Grace

This is probably the most important part.

You don’t have to be the perfect dog mom.

You don’t have to be the perfect mom.

And you definitely don’t need to have everything figured out before your baby arrives.

Your dog may need some time to adjust.

So will you.

There will be beautiful moments.

There will be exhausting moments.

There may even be moments where you’re holding a crying baby while your dog is staring at you like, “Excuse me, I believe we have forgotten my dinner.”

And somehow, you’ll figure it out.

Because your family is growing.

Your dog isn’t losing their place.

They’re gaining a new little person to love. 🐶❤️👶

And someday, you’ll probably look over and see your child curled up next to your dog and think:

“This is exactly what I hoped for.”

From D2C Pets 🐾

Your dog has been there for your quiet mornings, your bad days, your happy days, and all the little moments in between.

When your baby arrives, life will change.

But there’s still plenty of room for your four-legged family member in the beautiful chaos.

One baby. One dog. One growing family. And a whole lot of love. 💚
